How to break bad eating habits

Being conscious of what we eat and what is triggering our eating habits, is the first step how to break bad eating habits. Studies show that it takes up to 21 days to change a habit, so be patient with your body and do these changes step at a time.

Once you stop your bad eating habits you will not only control your weight gain but also gain many health benefits in the long run, because you are nourishing your body with the nutrients it needs. Now here are 6 steps on how to break those bad eating habits:

When you feel hungry, drink first don’t eat:

We often mistake hunger for thirst. I would say that's the main bad eating habit we have. When you feel you are craving something, try to hydrate first. Also try to drink liquids like herbal teas, green juices, and bone broth. Most of the time you will feel satiated and will not feel that hunger anymore.

Stabilize your blood sugar:

Kelly Leveaque, the author of Body Love, recommends that we eat the 4 Fab diet. Making sure each meal consists of protein, greens, good fat, and fiber. This will help stabilize your sugar levels, and hence your sugar cravings. This is one of the main keys how to break your bad eating habits.

Minimize processed foods:

They contain many chemicals, preservatives, salt, and sugar. Instead, opt in for fruits, nuts, or cleaner packaged foods (check the ingredients).

Intermitted fasting:

Fasting for 12 to 16 hours helps your body get rid of all the toxins, and gain more energy. Try to end your day with an early dinner, at 5 or 6 pm, and not eat breakfast before 7 am, for example. Once your body gets used to this routine, you will break many bad eating habits, because you are spending more than half of the day fasting.

Sit down when you eat:

Enjoy this moment, and be present rather than multitask ( a bad habit often goes unrecognized) This way you are not only aware of what you are eating but also giving your body a chance to properly digest your food. When we are multitasking, the body is under stress and cannot digest food properly. That's a bad eating habit you want to break. I understand that you have a busy schedule, so instead of eating snacks, plan your day to sit for your 3 meals. Another option, you can always substitute one of your meals for a liquid meal (smoothie) - I really like the recipes outlined in this book Body LoveLiquid meals are easier on the digestive system because of their form.

Eat good fat:

You read this right, back in the old days, fat-free diets were the thing, but not anymore. Studies show that our bodies need those fat molecules to feed our brains, skin, hair, and nails. They are one of the main building blocks of our brains. Now I am not saying go grab that French fries, I am referring to good fats like salmon, avocados, olive oil, and nuts. Good fat will keep you satiated and will help you carve away from eating that bad stuff.
